BIRTH CERTIFICATES & PICTURES:
**You DO NOT need to send in your birth certificate this year if you were in a USGWA event last season. Also, pictures are only used for doing the TOP 12 ratings pre-season (Jan. 15, 2007 edition of Wrestling USA Magazine) and the All-American issue of Wrestling USA Magazine (May 30, 2007). So, if you are not a senior likely to place at Nationals, or are not likely to be rated in next season\'s TOP 12 (2007-08), there is no need to send a picture. Good luck, and have a great season.
11-7-06
If you notice, there have been 8 or so changes in the rankings. This is because we never received pictures of those girls. A letter was sent out in late September, with an October 20 deadline. The pictures have been forwarded to Wrestling USA Magazine. Wrestling USA Magazine will NOT publish a blank square that says \"picture no available\", so we move in others from last year or persons who are deserving that we have pictures of. When the application for a tournament requests a picture, it is so those pictures can be used for the Wrestling USA Magazine TOP 10 article that is published annually on January 15, and for the Wrestling USA Magazine All-American issue that is published annually on May 30. No picture, you will not be included. Sorry. Kent Bailo

Finally!! New weight classes for middle schoolers based on actual numbers. Over the past 3 years 784 middle school girls have wrestled in USGWA events. We decided to have 16 weight classes for Middle School Girls at the National Championships. (Middle schoolers are girls in grades 6-7-8). Taking the number of 784 and dividing by 16 (the number of weight classes) equals 49 girls per group. All of the weigh-in cards were stacked up and counted out -- 49 per group. The break-off numbers will be the weight classes. Remember, the weight class number represents the heaviest girl in the class. (Example, weight class 104.5, all girls in that class weighed between 101.1 lbs. and 104.5 lbs.) Here they are:
1. - 74 lbs.
2. - 83 lbs.
3. - 89 lbs.
4. - 94 lbs.
5. - 97.5 lbs.
6. - 101 lbs.
7. - 104.5 lbs.
8. - 108 lbs.
9. - 111.5 lbs.
10. - 115 lbs.
11. - 119 lbs.
12. - 123.5 lbs.
13. - 128 lbs.
14. - 136.5 lbs.
15. - 150 lbs.
16. - Over 150 lbs.
The gaps are biggest at either end, just like the high school girls (and high school boys). This reflects the bell-shaped curve. The reason for weight classes like this is so that each weight is of equal numerical difficulty to win. If we weighed all 784 girls at \"Jones Middle School\" (located in Anytown, USA) in grades 6, 7, and 8, 1/16th of them would naturally fall into each of these weight groups. Gaps from each weight class to the next are: 9 lbs., 6 lbs., 5 lbs., 3.5 lbs., 3.5 lbs., 3.5 lbs., 3.5 lbs. 3.5 lbs., 3.5 lbs., 4 lbs., 4.5 lbs., 4.5 lbs., 8.5 lbs., 13.5 lbs. (The lightest wrestler in the lowest group was 56.5 lbs., the heaviest in the heaviest group was 186.1 lbs. Here are the actual numbers of the 784 middle school girls that wrestled in the USGWA events in 2002-2003-2004 broken down into 10 lbs. increments:
56.5 lbs. to 59.8 - 4 girls
60.3 lbs. to 69.8 lbs. - 25 girls
70.0 lbs. to 79.9 lbs. - 50 girls
80.0 lbs. to 89.9 lbs. - 80 girls
90.0 lbs. to 99.9 lbs. - 119 girls
100.0 lbs. to 109.0 lbs. - 142 girls
110.0 lbs. to 119.8 lbs. - 126 girls
120.0 lbs. to 129.9 lbs. - 104 girls
130.0 lbs. to 138.9 lbs. - 47 girls
140.0 lbs. to 148.8 lbs. - 37 girls
150.0 lbs. to 157.0 lbs. - 22 girls
160.0 lbs. to 169.5 lbs. - 19 girls
172.5 lbs. to 178.5 lbs. - 7 girls
185.4 lbs. to 186.1 lbs. - 2 girls

The 2005 USGWA National Championships will again be at Lake Orion High School. The dates will be March 19-20. Saturday-Sunday.
Upon review, we will have Women's Collegiate Folkstyle ONLY. That will be on Sunday, March 20. Weigh-in either on Friday, March 18 from 4-10pm or on Sunday, March 20, 2005 from 7:30 to 8:30am. Wrestling starts at 9:00am.
Also, we are going to make changes in the Middle School weight classes. Which would you prefer, "blocked weights"/Madison weights with an equal number of wrestlers in each class OR use collected USGWA data from the last 4 years to determine a number for the weight class. We presently used 17 weights classes, but entries per weight were not equal. Would 14 weight classes be enough? Email Kent Bailo with your thoughts at kbailo@tir.com. Thanks.
